Papua's sacred forest for women only

"This has always been a women's-only forest.... When we enter the forest, we're free, as there are no men around." The rule is that the women go naked, once they arrive in boats to gather clams. "We freely share stories with the elders.... Here women confide in each other. We can never let it go."

"In [West] Papua, [occupied by] Indonesia, there is a mangrove forest that only women are allowed to enter. It’s a special place where generations of women have gathered clams and shared stories. If men are found inside the forest, they are fined. BBC Indonesia’s all-female crew was granted permission to enter.

"This sacred place for women is now under threat." The forest is shrinking, because the ocean is polluted, and awash with plastic waste.
