Someone asked in one of the sessions whether this kind of repression happened in other places. The first place that came to mind was China, where emperors of various periods, most notoriously the founder of the Chin dynasty. This 18th century bookleaf painting depicts books being burned and scholars being thrown into a pit, presumably to be buried alive.
